FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE FOR 2022
Even though summer is still here with its 100-degree days, fall is just around the corner. Fall is my absolute favorite season, with the cool air, beautiful color changes, pumpkin everything, and THE CLOTHES! Let’s talk fall capsule wardrobes: elevated style edition!
The weather in the fall can vary depending on where you live. A fall capsule wardrobe needs to contain items that can be worn on warm, sunny days, as well as cooler, rainy days that bring in that fall vibe. I can tell that 60 degrees in Michigan are way different than 60 degrees in Colorado!
Capsule wardrobes work because they allow you to streamline your wardrobe. A hand-picked selection of clothing can be more versatile than a closet full of choices. Having a strong foundation base of clothing and the flexibility of neutral pieces, you avoid having a wardrobe full of items that don’t mix and match.
A capsule wardrobe helps you tune into your style and eliminate excess pieces that won’t be worn regularly. And trust me when I say, a capsule wardrobe does not mean wearing the same outfit every day!
All that said, I am sharing my fall wardrobe essentials for 2022. Whether you’re working from home, in an office, stay-at-home mom, a woman over 40, or just looking to update your wardrobe, I’m going to show you how to build a fall capsule wardrobe. I hope that this post will answer your style need questions for the fall season. Now, let’s save you some time and money getting ready this season!
WHAT’S IN A FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE?
In a well-thought-out fall capsule wardrobe, you’ll find transitional outerwear, knits, basic tops, jeans, leather leggings, a sweater dress /or midi skirt), ankle boots, sneakers, loafers, and minimal accessories. It’s pretty amazing how just a small selection of versatile pieces can make endless outfit combinations.
Your fall capsule wardrobe should reflect your lifestyle, whether it’s laid-back and casual, or professional and dressy. Choose pieces you know you will wear again and again. I tend to wear more elevated, casual pieces and have chosen so for this capsule. I am a mom of three boys who likes to look put together.
HOW TO BUILD A FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE
Versatile and transitional pieces that work for both warm and cooler weather build the perfect capsule wardrobe for fall. Capsule wardrobes are often built with classic staples that are always in style, not trendy, “of-the-moment” clothes, and consist mostly of neutral colors like navy, black, white, grey, brown, and olive green.
Some fall essentials you should plan for are outerwear, bottoms, layers, shoes, and accessories. Outerwear – this includes coats, jackets, shackets, and heavier layering pieces like an oversized blazer. Think layers, like short and long cardigans, light-knit sweaters, and vests. Additionally, a few pairs of bottoms such as vintage wash jeans, neutral trousers, and midi skirts help to create so many outfits. It’s important to have a good variety of shoes, especially in fall when the weather varies so much. You don’t need a lot, 4-6 shoe choices should get you through the fall season and carry you into winter. Let’s use the month of September to start the transition as the weather can still be quite warm. The following steps will help you build your capsule wardrobe for fall:
- Start by removing the summer items that you will no longer be needing from your closet and put them into storage bins (sandals, dresses, and shorts).
- Keep any pieces that are good for transitional weather, such as light-knit sweaters, jeans, white and graphic t-shirts, sneakers, and a denim jacket.
- Make a small list of items you’d like to add to your fall capsules, such as a coatigan, oversized blazer, new denim, leggings, cardigan, combat boots, thicker knit sweaters, and heeled ankle boots.
- Stick to mostly neutrals as these pieces are the most versatile and can easily create a multitude of different outfits and they will carry you into seasons to come.

LONG WOOL OR TRENCH COAT
A long coat is a great staple for any fall wardrobe capsule. Depending on where you live, if the weather is warmer, rainier, or cooler in the fall, you can choose from a wool coat, a “coatigan”, or a trench coat.

A well-made, high-quality, perfectly-fitting white tee is a MUST for every capsule wardrobe, no matter the season. Spending the extra on such a versatile basic like this is important in building your capsule wardrobe. Graphic tees are such a fun way to give a subtle edge to any look. I love this particular graphic tee because it’s classic, and I know it looks good with any of the outerwear I just listed!
This may be the most iconic piece of a fall capsule wardrobe. A crisp, well-made, wrinkle-free, white button-up shirt. It is a sophisticated, chic, weather-appropriate style staple. It’s also the perfect layering piece and looks amazing with any outerwear and every bottom you own. Remember Sharon Stone at the Oscars wearing the white button-down with a Vera Wang skirt?! Perfect example!
On chillier fall days, a knit hoodie can keep you feeling cozy but also has an elevated look and feel. I just love the look of this cashmere hoodie with a pair of jeans, sneakers, and a blazer.

SWEATERS
The basic sweaters to own are a striped sweater, a neutral sweater, a gray sweater, and a black sweater. Sweaters are life during the fall. Having such straightforward sweaters serves as the base layer for so many fall fashion looks.
Short-sleeve sweaters have also become a closet staple for me, think elevated tee. When you want something a little nicer, warmer, but not quite ready for a traditional long sleeve sweater, short sleeve sweaters are my go-to. They are great for wearing as is with jeans or trousers and perfect for layering under jackets and blazers. I tend to get hot easily, so a short sleeve sweater is perfect under blazers.

wash, black, and destructed are three types of jeans to help create a great wardr9be foundation, fall, and beyond. If you have one of each of these styles in your fall capsule wardrobe, you are good to go. I’m guilty of overbuying jeans because they’re my first love. I also feel like a good-fitting pair of jeans is like the perfect bra! And let’s talk about confidence boosters when you find the “perfect fit”!

Sneakers: My obsession with sneakers are a real issue. I’ll be honest—it was really hard to choose. You need a white sneaker and then a “dressy” sneaker. For the white sneaker, I chose these Veja’s, their neutral suede makes them go with literally everything and they’re super comfortable. For my dressy sneaker, I chose these P448 sneakers. I love them so much and can wear them with everything in this capsule!
Heels: If you’re going to have one heel in your fall capsule wardrobe, make it a nude pump. It’s the most versatile and pairs well with jeans, skirts, and leggings!
Booties: Same goes for your fall capsule bootie! Make it a neutral shade like camel or tan to ensure it works with every other piece within your wardrobe.

Lastly, adding in a selection of classy accessories to your fall capsule wardrobe will tie it all together. You can never go wrong with subtle, dainty gold-plated jewelry pieces; they are the finisher of a great outfit! A crossbody bag has been my go-to for t; the last couple of. years and everyone needs a classic tote! Finally, Don’t forget a great pair of sunglasses and a watch. Done and Done!
