Spray Tan Tips: Before and After

Spray Tan Tips for before and after

Spray Tan Tips

As summer comes to an end, so does the tan. Getting a spray tan is a great way to achieve a natural-looking, sun-kissed glow. However, it’s important to be aware of the steps you need to take before and after your spray tan appointment to ensure the best possible results. I’m going to give you some essential tips on how to prepare for a spray tan, as well as what to do afterward in order to make your tan last as long as possible. So, if you’re looking for advice on how to get the most out of your spray tan, this is for you.  Here are my best spray tan tips for before and after that I’ve learned over the years.

What To Wear To Your Spray Tan Appointment

Choosing the right clothing to wear before your spray tan is crucial! Opt for loose-fitting, dark-colored clothing to avoid any staining. Avoid tight bras or underwear that may rub against your tan. Consider wearing flip-flops or open-toed shoes to prevent smudging on your feet. Remember, comfort and minimal contact with your skin are key before your spray tan. Typically, when I get a spray tan I wear a long sleeve top (no bra) and long sweatpants like this set.

Before Your Spray Tan Tips:

Shower- You will want to wash off all your makeup, deodorant, lotions, and perfumes prior to your spray tan. I tend to schedule my spray tan midday and sleep in the fresh spray tan.  Be aware, the tan will transfer and will get on your sheets!  I just ordered this sleep sac to help keep my bedsheets for staining.  Also, make sure to shower first thing in the morning.

**If you use essential oils, make sure you have not used them for 72hrs before your tan. This may cause the tan to apply patchy.

Shave- Make sure you shave everything beforehand. You’ll want to limit shaving afterward because each time you shave you are actually exfoliating. Obviously, you are removing hair, but shaving also helps to remove dead skin.

Exfoliate- Start by exfoliating your skin the day before to remove any dead skin cells. Avoid using any oil-based products, as they can create a barrier and affect the outcome of your tan. You may find mixed reviews on this. I have always used an exfoliator before getting a spray tan. However, I have recently read how the majority of exfoliants have waxes and other ingredients that can also cause build-up. You can opt to use a gentle cleanser and exfoliating gloves, especially if you’re sensitive.
* If you are spraying for a special event make sure to get your pedicures, hair, and/or nails are done BEFORE you go for your spray tan! Make the spray tan the last on your to-do  list!

Your salon should offer you the following products:

Spray Tan Feet Pads to protect the bottom of your feet getting color.
Disposable Caps/Hair Cover Nets
Disposable Underwear or wear your own undergarments or a bikini bottom. I have never seen a disposable bra, but there are some available to purchase here.

What To Expect During the Process

Once you’re all prepped and ready before spray tan, it’s time for the spray tan process! You’ll step into a private booth or room, and a trained professional. They will guide you into certain positions to apply the spray tan solution evenly onto your skin using a handheld machine. The solution is very cold, so consider this your heads up!! Also, some of the positions you stand can make you feel awkward, especially if you are shy. however, The process usually takes just a few minutes, and you’ll be done! You should immediately see a bronzed glow developing. It’s a quick and easy way to achieve that beautiful, sun-kissed look.

After Spray Tan Tips:

Stay Dry– You do not want to get wet for at least 12+ hours! Unless you get the rapid accelerator spray tan. Avoid working out, showering, or swimming (for at least 12+ hours) so the tan can fully develop. Remember, you must have a  “hands off” policy till after your first shower, so there are no sunless tanning accidents.

Shower first thing in the morning or when your advised to.  As soon as you get in the shower you will notice the water turn orange and go right down the drain, this is supposed to happen! Promise! You want to make sure you are using a mild soap afterward to make the tan last its longest.

Moisturize– Probably one of the most overlooked, yet MOST IMPORTANT steps! Because the tanning solution takes a little while to develop, you shouldn’t start moisturizing until after your first shower, which should be at least eight hours after your tan but no more than 24 hours later. If you moisturize before your first shower, you may run the risk of streaking your spray tan. You want to make sure you get a good moisturizer that won’t strip your tan! Dry skin can also begin to look really patchy and scaly. You want your tan to last the longest it can, but also when it fades you want it to fade smoothly, lotion helps this process! Exfoliating may help the problem. as it begins to fade. Be careful and read the labels on your lotion. Some contain ingredients that may impact the longevity of your spray tan.
